For Those in Peril: A Chamber Opera in Two PartsLibretto by Francis L. Lynch & Raymond Humphreys Were their husbands truly safe at the lighthouse in this storm? In the early winter of 1801, a relentless succession of storms
batters the coast of Wales. At a lighthouse 20 miles out to sea
where two men are stationed, their prolonged quarrel comes to an
unexpected and deadly conclusion, just a month before they are
scheduled to be relieved. Meanwhile, on shore, the keepers' wives
wait anxiously and pray for their husbands' safety. After passing
ships report a possible sign of distress at the lighthouse, the
wives' anxiety deepens, but the authorities can do nothing until
the storms abate. When a relief party is finally able to land on
the rocks of the lighthouse, a grim discovery awaits them. Based
on a true event, this new work from the composer of Joseph's
Gift uses just six singers and five players (flute,
clarinet, violin, viola, and cello) in twenty brief scenes to
relate the tale of this tragic episode in maritime history. EVANSTON CHAMBER
